Bon Accord Care are delighted to share the news that Hazlehead Academy have been awarded the Social Enterprise in Education Award for their ‘Peachy Pompom Café’.
From June 2019 till just before lockdown, a group of 12 Hazlehead Academy pupils have baked and hosted a weekly Dementia Cafe for our residents at Kingswood Court. Pupils and staff have also taken part in the Alzheimer’s Society ‘Dementia Friends’ training.
Earlier this year, with support from the Scottish Social Enterprise Academy, they set up their own ‘Peachy Pompom Café’ social enterprise to support the dementia cafe by raising money through making and selling pompom wreaths. They received their Social Enterprise in Education Award, which is supported by the Scottish Government, on 15 June 2020.
The Social Enterprise in Education programme gives students hands-on experience in running a business with a social purpose. In this instance the pupils wanted to explore intergenerational practice which aims to bring people together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities, promoting greater understanding and respect between generations and contributing to the building of more cohesive communities.
There are, of course, so many benefits to bringing people together from different generations. Our residents really enjoy spending time with the young people, getting to know them, learning from them, and having fun, while the pupils gain confidence and love hearing stories from when they were that age.
Prior to lockdown the pupils had been progressing with assistance from our ‘Developing the Young Workforce’ lead, Carol Massey who hopes some of those involved might now look more closely at a career in care. Our foundation and modern apprenticeships are designed to facilitate this and perhaps, having seen firsthand the job satisfaction that can be gained, they and others will want to pursue their career in the health and social care sector.
All the pupils and staff involved are delighted with this recognition of their hard work and creativity. They are looking forward to growing their social enterprise with a community cafe and developing their links with Bon Accord Care.
